Bio Summary
Full professor. Personal chair, Fac. Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Maastricht, Endocrinology Medical Specialist. He obtained his PhD in2003 on the management of impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia in diabetes. His research interests include the pathophysiology, consequences and management of hypoglycaemia in people with diabetes, the use of technology to improve the lives of people with diabetes and the etiology of (type 2) diabetes and its complications. Currently, he is coordinator of the EU-funded MELISSA project, which focuses on developing an app that uses AI to provide personalized advises on insulin needs. This MELISSA app integrates all kinds of data, such as individual glucose measurements, personal characteristics, the amount of carbohydrates in meals, and previous insulin use. In the future, the intention is to include even more data in the calculation, such as physical exercise. He has (co-) authored over 175 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and has served on the editorial board of Diabetologia.
